Presenter Bio:
Benjamin is one of Canada’s leading practitioners in Crisis & Risk Communications. He is currently a Principal at the Centre for Crisis & Risk Communications.
Benjamin served Calgary, Alberta and area for 16 years as an Advanced Care Paramedic.
During his service, Benjamin assumed multiple roles including the services Public Education Officer and Operations Superintendent. As the Public Education Officer, he became inspired to change career path by his interactions and relationships with members of the media. Benjamin returned to academic studies and completed his Master’s Degree in Professional Communications with a research focus of the influence of social media on emergency management.
In 2013, he returned to the City of Calgary in the role of Supervisor, Crisis Communications where he quickly found his background and education put to the test as the City and area responded to the costliest natural disaster and largest peace-time evacuation in Canadian history #YYCFlood. As a member of Canada Task Force 2, his crisis communication leadership was again utilized during the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfires as he supported the local authority communications.
Benjamin was called as a crisis communications expert by the Province of Ontario during the Elliott Lake disaster Public Inquiry hearing. He was also a key participant in a Department of National Defense research project, Social Media Expert in Emergency Management ‘round Table.
He now shares his knowledge and experience as associate faculty, instructing undergraduate and graduate level students at Mount Royal University in Calgary, AB and Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC.
He is a sought-after trainer and conference speaker.
