Following the 2013 flood, The City of Calgary developed a novel business continuity program designed to minimize future interruptions to city services. This presentation will review Calgary’s corporate process, and discuss how this process has enhanced the city’s ability to identify, prioritize and implement resiliency for those IT systems required for delivery of critical city services.

 Cost: There is no charge to members of the DRIE WEST Chapter.  Non-Members will be charged $25.00 for the event. 

 Memberships: 2019 DRIE West Memberships will be available at the door at a cost of $50.00 for the year.

Michael leads a team towards reducing the impact and frequency of disasters in Calgary by ensuring disaster risk reduction principles are integrated into city services, infrastructure, businesses, and land use policies. Michael has been published in the Journal of Business Continuity & Emergency Planning, and authored the corporate business continuity policy for The City of Calgary. During emergency response, Michael serves as a designated Planning Section Chief or EOC Manager in Calgary’s municipal Emergency Operations Centre, where he has historically participated in events such as the 2013 Southern Alberta Floods, the 2014 Downtown Power Outage, and Calgary’s operations related to the 2016 Fort McMurray Wildfires.

With over 17 years of progressive experience in the IT field, Patricia is the leader of the Availability Management team at The City of Calgary. She is leading The City’s IT Service Resiliency and Disaster Recovery initiative, which has included the development of a categorization framework to prioritize IT systems and has overseen the implementation of technology infrastructure to ensure protection of critical data, and continued service delivery or rapid recovery of critical IT systems and services in the event of unplanned component and facility outages.
